The cm to Inches Calculation
Divide centimeters by 2.54, or multiply by 0.3937 if you prefer. The inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, so this is exact arithmetic, not an approximation that drifts with rounding. Multiplying inches by 2.54 takes you back.
Worked example
A 30 cm school ruler: 30 ÷ 2.54 = 11.811 inches, which is why the other edge of that same ruler stops just short of the 12 inch mark. A 100 cm measuring tape reads 39.37 inches.
Screens and paper
Display diagonals are quoted in inches almost everywhere: a 15.6 inch laptop panel measures 39.6 cm corner to corner. Paper goes the other way. A4 is 21 by 29.7 cm, roughly 8.27 by 11.69 inches, which is why it never quite fits a US Letter template.

For metric-only steps, the cm to mm converter just moves the decimal point. Converting a person's height into feet and inches is a two-part answer, so it has its own page.
